Traditional kintsugi asks for something the modern method does not: time. The work is done with urushi, a natural lacquer that has been used in Japan for more than a thousand years, and it sets at the pace of the air around it. Across four sessions we will follow the full sequence — joining the fragments, smoothing the seam, layering the lacquer, and finally laying the gold. Between each session the work rests in the studio, slowly hardening, while you carry on with your week.
This course is for those who want to meet the material as it has always been worked, with its full weight of patience and care. We will speak about safety and skin contact in detail before we begin, and you will be guided closely through every step. What you leave with is not only a mended object, but the feel of a craft that does not hurry.
